Kingston – Jaffna Twin City deal signed : A Mile stone in British Tamil history

While Britain prepared to exit the European Union , British Tamil links to their homeland found a Britain new partner from South Asia.

Kingston Council has now signed it is twinning with the city of Jaffna , in a bid to build “greater understanding and sharing knowledge” in areas of governance, healthcare and education.

The deal will be sealed at a ceremony at the Guildhall on Tuesday, October 18, with Tamil Chief Minister of Northern Sri Lanka , C V Vigneswaran giving the keynote speech. Chief Mininster hailed the event ‘historic’ in his speech.

 

“We look forward to the growth of British and diaspora investment,” he concluded. “May Kingston lead the way.”

Kingston has approximately 12,000 Tamils living in the borough and is one of the largest and fastest growing local communities. Tamil is now Kingston’s second language.

Councillor Kevin Davis, Leader of Kingston Council, said:

“The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames has a rich history of community cohesion. Our twinning with Jaffna celebrates our large local Tamil community and recognises the importance it plays in the borough.

“Kingston has a great track record of twinning to share ideas with other towns on the best approach to tackling our shared challenges.

“We’re delighted to welcome Hon. Justice C.V. Vigneswaran to Kingston and are excited to hear him speak at this historic event.”

Yesterday, James Berry MP attended a ceremony at Kingston’s Guildhall to celebrate the twinning of Kingston with Jaffna, a Northern Province in Sri Lanka. The move to forge links with Jaffna was initiated by James and Conservative Councillors in recognition of Kingston’s many Tamil residents
